CSP Headlines

NREL’s new open-source model, Sup3rCC, simulates future energy-climate impacts. It uses generative machine learning to produce high-resolution climate data to understand how climate change will affect renewable energy sources like wind and solar. The data is essential for energy system planning as countries transition to more renewable energy sources. Sup3rCC is 40 times faster than traditional methods and produces data in 15,000 times greater detail.

Energy China’s 50MW CSP tower plant in Hami, China achieved a new daily power generation record of 1.0315 million kilowatt hours. This record is noteworthy because the system withstood high winds up to 36.89 meters/second without damage, demonstrating the wind resistance of the heliostat technology.

The Australian Solar Thermal Energy Association (AUSTELA) advocated for changes to the Capacity Investment Scheme to benefit more from CSP technology.

The benefits of these CSP Hybrid Contracts are:

  • Lower costs: Studies show CSP can offer the lowest cost per unit of electricity for long-duration dispatchable power.

  • System strength: CSP contributes to grid stability like traditional gas turbines, unlike solar and battery storage.

  • Clean and dispatchable: CSP generates clean energy and dispatches it according to grid needs, unlike traditional solar.

PV Headlines

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the final rules to simplify and incentivize renewable energy development on public lands. They offer lower rents and fees, streamlined permitting, and priority for certain projects.

Renantis’s new 1.4MW solar power plant is now operational on the rooftop of the carbon fiber component manufacturer (ARS TECH) in Italy. The plant is expected to generate a third of the company's energy needs and reduce CO2 emissions by 800 tons per year.

ACWA Power secured an $80 million loan (half RMB, half USD) from the Bank of China to fund the Tashkent solar project in Uzbekistan. This is the first RMB loan cooperation between a Chinese bank and a Saudi company. This loan is a significant development for the Belt and Road Initiative and Vision 2030 (Saudi Arabia's economic diversification plan). The Tashkent project paves the way for future cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia.

Energy Storage

Polar Night, a large-scale sand-based thermal energy storage company, secured €7.6 million in funding. They plan to use it to help them grow their business and improve their technology to convert stored heat into electricity. The round was led by prominent figures like Jonathan Oppenheimer and included Finnish and Swedish investors. Polar Night Energy sees this as a major step towards becoming a global leader in thermal energy storage and contributing to clean energy production.
